I´m investigating the problem, but also developing and testing a flak cannon, that could possibly replace at least one set of 3mm railguns, as they don´t seem to be too effective against drones (they are against missiles, though) cosmic radiation producing radionuclides in the Earths at- mosphere. I´ve also installed more power generators, and I should be able in theory to fire a full broadside of six railguns at once, though it´s not happening at the moment(only half seem to fire). Radiation shields seem to have fixed the problem anyway. Also considering switching to many smaller ones, but right now it´s not number 1 priority. I´m switching to either 2 or 3 1000t tanks. The configuration with 5 tanks was really exaggerated, and I realised this right after writing my second post. So essentially no, it doesn´t need to be stubby. If you mounted the fuel tanks as, say, a cluster of 2 in front of a cluster of 3, your crew would be a lot farther from the radiation sources, and the ship could be a little narrower.
